Confiram a entrevista abaixo:

"hannah-3"

A outra cosplayer convidada, SuperKayce, me orientou muito.

Hannah Éva has been cosplaying for a short while, but has crafted some truly astounding costumes so far. A full-time costume designer, Hannah told me about her routine, her experience as a cosplay guest at a convention and her life as a cosplayer in America.

You can read the interview below:

"hannah-3"

How old are you and how long have you been working with cosplay?

I am 23 years old and I have been cosplaying for about 2 years.

How did you become a costume maker? Was it something you always wanted to do, or did you get involved with it by chance?

Becoming a costume maker was definitely more by chance. I never really knew what I realistically wanted to be when I grew up but whether I liked it or not I knew it would end up having something to do with art since I felt that was my only skill.

These past few years, even before I knew what cosplaying was, my dream was to be in costume and get paid for it. I learned how to sew while I was in the hospital when I was 15. It was taught to me to be a kind of therapy. After that, though, I didn’t think much of it until I was starting to make my first ever costume.

Thankfully I’m a fast learner because I went from newbie to making a living out of creating costumes in just 2 years.

In a previous interview you mentioned that cosplay became your whole life. As a costume maker, what is your routine? Do you work at home or do you have a workshop? How much of your time do you put into it? Do you reconcile your passion with a day-job?

I am diagnosed with a pretty extreme case of bipolar disorder. I’ve lost jobs because of it before and I ended up having to quit my last job because of it. Because of that, costume design is my only job.

It is very helpful to be my own boss because I have to plan my life around my disorder. I work from home. I do have a separate room for all of my costuming but it tends to spread throughout the house. I do get sick a lot and I have to take care of my health first but every single day that I am able to function I work on costumes.

I don’t have much of a social life so I’ve become a bit of a workaholic. I do feel a little bad for my family and friends because I don’t have much else to talk about other than my costumes because it’s basically the only thing in my life other than my pets.

"hannah-6"

In your page, you brought up that you also accept commissions for Halloween costumes. While the date is celebrated around the world, I believe America is one of the few places where it became this massive, highly popular event in which even adults play dress-up. Do many American cosplayers make “casual” costumes as well? How easy it is to circle between the world of cosplay and other varieties of costume making?

I make the joke every year saying that I am dressing up as a normal person for Halloween since I’m in costume just about every other day of the year, kind of like this is my one day off.

However this is just a sad attempt to cover up the fact that I honestly haven’t celebrated Halloween in many years. I absolutely love the holiday but I just never have anything going on or get invited to any events or parties.

Until then, though, it is wonderful for my business as a costume designer because I get to branch out to a wider audience. I can imagine Halloween would be easier for cosplayers because we don’t have to stress so much about getting a costume last minute if we already have some in storage. I know I would use Halloween to have a more casual costume compared to the ones I take to conventions.

I feel an extreme amount of pressure each time I make a new costume. I could use Halloween as a way to keep me grounded since it’s more about having fun than a career choice. I think going from the world of cosplay to other varieties of costume making is fairly easy. Generally when you cosplay you are a specific character, but for Halloween you can be anything. It doesn’t have to be specific. Although for someone who isn’t much of a designer I can see that being a challenge because you aren’t following a plan for the costume.

Creating costumes for different festivals can be fun and challenging because you would follow a specific type of costume and sometimes must stay within those restrictions. Although I love a challenge and designing is my favorite part of creating costumes so I look forward to creating any type for any event.

"hannah-7"

You’ve been invited to conventions as a guest cosplayer. Could you tell me a little bit about the experience? What does a guest cosplayer normally do? How does one normally get approached to become a guest? Who does the approaching?

The experience was daunting. I didn’t know what to expect, and it was overwhelming. Once I got there, however, I met some pretty amazing people. My fellow cosplay guest, SuperKayce, really helped guide me.

As a guest, I was available for photo opportunities, answering questions, and giving cosplay advice. I was also able to sell my prints and other merchandise! One of the responsibilities I had was to host a panel discussion on a topic of my choice. I chose “Intro to Cosplay”, since it was fairly easy for me to relate to with my “newbie” cosplayer status.

Since I had never been to a panel before, SuperKayce joined me and was a big help. She not only guided me, but also helped guide the discussion. It was a really amazing experience, and I’m really looking forward to my next guesting opportunity.

My experience becoming a guest at a convention involved me contacting the convention organizers. I gave them my cosplay information, and they offered me a spot at their cosplay booth.

Have you ever worked with cosplay outside the “geek scene” properly speaking (eg.: in corporate events, children’s parties, charity events, marketing stunts)?

I have done some charity events in cosplay and this past year I worked as an entertainer for the Iola Car Show, in Iola, Wisconsin, USA. It is a lot of fun to do these events but it’s a completely different experience. I mean you go from being in costume as the norm to suddenly having all eyes on you because you stand out as the only person in costume. I’m a natural performer who doesn’t get embarrassed easily so I really enjoy it and I cherish every opportunity that I get to be in costume.

Beyond the personal fulfillment, what does a cosplayer look for in contests (eg.: prizes, prestige, networking)? Is it possible to become a professional cosplayer without participating in contests?

It adds a sense of pride – getting to say you are an award winning cosplayer.

Other than that, cosplayers can get some wonderful prizes, create new contacts, and get their picture taken. Since a lot of people watch the contest you get recognized more than you would if someone happened to pass you by on the convention floor.

It is definitely possible for a cosplayer to be professional without participating in contests. They do have to work a bit harder just to make up for the benefits they miss, but a lot of professional cosplaying is social networking. I definitely struggle with this because I’ve been a very private person my entire life so I struggle trying to come up with material to display. A lot of conventions are interested more in your social networking skills rather than how many contests you’ve won.

How do you choose the contests in which you participate, and how do you prepare yourself for them? Do you conceive a specific cosplay for each event, or do you seize the opportunity to show off ongoing projects?

If I’m going to enter a contest I will have planned a new costume to make months in advance. I like to research the contests before committing to entering so I know what to expect.

I don’t enter the contests every time I go to conventions. I put so much work into the costumes that I compete with and sometimes I just need a break and want to enjoy the convention rather than stress about a contest.

My strategy is to always be kind and joke around to ease the stress while waiting in line to be judged. I feel very comfortable when I get on stage and it’s like the entire world disappears. I usually have to ask if anyone even clapped for me afterward because I can’t hear it. After I get off stage I tell myself that I’m not going to win over and over, that way if I don’t win I’m not as disappointed and if I do win it means so much more.

Competing is a lot of fun but there are so many people that take it so seriously. I’ve noticed that while you’re on the convention floor everyone is so kind and supportive but as soon as you line up to compete a lot of people get so tense. I was bullied all my life so it’s easier for me to recognize when people are being judgmental.

That is my absolute least favorite thing about any contest. People should let the judges do the judging. No matter your skill level it takes guts to walk on stage and be critiqued. We are all on the same boat so be respectful.

How does the job of a cosplay contest judge work? How are judges chosen? Are the rules for judging cosplays and performances the same throughout the country, or does each convention have its own standards?

I’ve only had the opportunity to judge one cosplay contest. As an official cosplay guest, judging the contest was one of my responsibilities. At this contest, we judged the entries based on a number of categories, including: stage presence, originality, and craftsmanship. Other contests throughout the country have different judging categories and scoring methods.

Cosplay is often mentioned in discussions about copyright law. In principle, character and costume designs belong to their respective IP holders, and any sort of for-profit activity involving them is forbidden. Have you ever had or have you ever witnessed any issues concerning copyright? Do you believe this is a hindrance to those wishing to work professionally with cosplay?

I like to think that every time I create a new costume I’m “sticking it to the man” in a way. Cosplayers are total rebels.

I do believe it makes it difficult for those wishing to work professionally with cosplay. It is definitely frightening to know that it could become an issue. If a cosplayer’s business gets sued or shut down they won’t have much left and that’s a scary feeling. I have yet to know anyone personally that has had an issue with this but I already have a copyright lawyer on my side if it were to ever happen to me.

There are things that cosplayers and costume makers are doing to help prevent this such as marketing or creating their work as inspired creations rather than making the exact costume. I personally die a little inside whenever a client wants their costume to look like the exact copy but I need to pay the bills so I will swallow my pride. After all I’m a designer not a replicator.

Is there any cosplay-related activity you want to do, but haven’t done yet? What are your long-term goals?

I haven’t had an opportunity to go to many conventions, so I would like to attend more of them. My dream would be to attend Comic Con International in San Diego. The SDCC is the World Cup of conventions. My main long-term goals are to attend as many conventions as possible, and travel the world cosplaying.

Most cosplayers use aliases. Could you talk a little bit about this practice? Do you know where it came from?

Being a cosplayer allows a person to be someone different for a day. Creating an alias is only fitting. It also can allow the cosplayer to separate their normal, everyday lives from their cosplay lives, similar to writers, actors, and other artists of all sorts. Having a pen name, or alias, is very common in the arts. For example, an actress born Norma Jeane Mortenson used the alias Marilyn Monroe. A writer named Samuel Clemens used the pen name Mark Twain. I don’t know where it came from, but has been a common practice in the arts for quite a while.

Is Hannah Éva an alias or your real name?

Hannah Éva is my real name. My full name is Hannah Éva Hofmann but I wanted a way to shorten it so it would be easier to refer to me. Hofmann for some reason is incredibly difficult for people to spell and Éva is difficult for people to pronounce correctly, so when I was choosing how to shorten my name, I had to choose which name would bother me the least whenever I was correcting someone (I say that in the most light-hearted way possible).

I’ve been going by Hannah Éva since I was in high school and I have multiple art awards under that name so I didn’t think it would be best to choose a new alias when I decided to start cosplaying. Another reason is that I feel choosing a new name wouldn’t honor my Hungarian heritage that I am very proud of. I’ve gotten so used to introducing myself as Hannah Éva rather than just Hannah.
