""

Those of you who follow my blog must have noticed by now that I am a historian by training. You are also aware (more than anyone else) that I never tire of writing about games.

This month, however, I have something different for you. An attempt to combine these two passions of mine – and offer something that will (hopefully) impress both gamers and my colleagues in academia.

It is my pleasure to announce The Triumphs of Turlough, my first historical board game.

Why a game and why this game?

""

Think about a historical game. It doesn’t matter if it’s a videogame on an epic scale like Crusader Kings, or a charming board game like Tokaido. Even if you don’t usually follow the work of historians, you must agree that there’s a difference between playing and reading about the past.

Games allow us not only to experiment historical episodes, but also to challenge our knowledge about them. From the outcome of battles to the very laws of physics, nothing is too sacred that gamers are not willing to meddle with. The medium would be a lot less fun if we couldn’t perform leaps of faith or “paint the map” with the colors of our empire.

""

Unfortunately, this isn’t always useful to us, historians. Commercial games may foster interest for the past – and can even help us think about some thorny themes. But they don’t live up to the level of argumentation – and rigor – expected of a scholarly monograph.

But what if there was a tool to fill in this gap? A game that was able to bring life to our hypotheses about the past while making sure that as little as possible was lost in translation? A way to explore, understand – and, why not, question – the works of historians in an engaging way?

The Triumphs of Turlough is my attempt to make this idea into reality. Based on my PhD research, it is a board game set in Ireland in the 13th and 14th centuries. In the role of Irish kings and English magnates, players will have to deal with challenges like dynastic feuds, political assassinations, food crises and climate change.

""

Our team is made up of historians from Laboratório de Estudos Medievais da USP and researchers from ARISE, a study group specialized in the use of games and technology for archaeological research.

Our goal is to observe how players handle themselves in dealing with the historical problems of 1276-1318. From there, we will analyze their solutions in light of our historical model and use them to refine our hypotheses about what really happened.

That, of course, is just part of the story. We also hope to introduce board game enthusiasts to a historical period that is little known outside Ireland.

But who, after all, was “Turlough”?

Turlough O’Brien (in Irish, Toirdhealbach Ó Briain) was the king of a chiefdom called Thomond, in the west coast of Ireland – a region that is now known as county Clare.

""

For unrelated reasons, also one of the most popular touristic destinations in Ireland. Image source

Like other Irish kings of the period, the O’Briens were officially subjects of the English Crown In their case, by means of a bond of vassalage to a local magnate, Thomas de Clare. In practice, however, the O’Briens were more or less free to rule over their territories in exchange for tributes and service.

Unfortunately, this bond of submission not always protected them from their Irish enemies. Even more unfortunately, Irish kingdoms were prone to erupt into dynastic feuds between rival factions of the clan.

Between 1276 and 1318, Thomond was the stage of one such violent war. The belligerents were the descendants of Turlough Ó Briain and those of his enemy Brian Rua Ó Briain. Clann Turlough – as his lineage came to be called – ended up victorious and was immortalized in a saga known as Caithréim Thoirdhealbhaigh: The Battle Deeds (or “Triumphs”) of Turlough.

""

One of the surviving manuscripts of “The Triumphs of Turlough”

It is the history behind this account that our board game wishes to draw upon. Players will take control of either Thomas de Clare or one of the subkingdoms of Thomond and make sure that the faction they support – either Clann Turlough or Clann Brian Rua – come out on top.

Winning this war will depend on more than political mettle alone. The end of the 13th c. and beginning of the 14th c. was a complicated period in human history. The planet was going through a period of global cooling known as the Little Ice Age. This episode of climate change led to an avalanche of problems such as harvests failures, animal murrains and economic difficulties

Is it possible that these adversities played a role in Clann Turlough’s ultimate victory?

This is what The Triumphs of Turlough was designed to find out — with the help of our players.

Obviously, making something work is always harder in practice. Game design conventions, after all, are there for a reason. It is easier to make a fun game that obey the classic tenets of its genre than attempt to reinvent the wheel in the name of historical validity.

In the next posts in this series, I will share with you the ins and outs of our creative process – and the challenges that we are facing to ensure that history and game design walk hand-in-hand.

Stay tuned!
